The band was formed in 1933 and since that time has been lucky to have an uninterrupted history. During our early years Chief Constable Grant of Kilmarnock Burgh Constabulary took a keen interest in the band (fortunately not in his professional capacity). As a result of his enthusiasm it was decided to adopt the Grant tartan as part of our uniform. This remained unchanged until 2001 when it was then agreed that, as an Ayrshire band, we would wear the Ayrshire tartan. Band membership has remained fairly stable in recent years with many capable young pipers and drummers joining to sustain our numbers. In charge of the band is Pipe Major Ian Todd who has held the post since December 2002. Assistant Pipe Major Jim Cartner ably supports him. Our leading drummer is John Cartner and in charge of the bass section is Jim Bryce. All of these band members have the experience of working together with other bands before joining Kilmarnock. Our longest serving member is Ian Evans who has faithfully supported the band for the best part of forty years both as a piper and as Pipe Major. Like the quote from Kilmarnock's well known export Ian is "Still Going Strong". Within the bands constitution it states that we "promote and encourage the culture of pipe band music and provide educational instruction". These objectives are mainly achieved through our involvement in competition work, public and private entertainment engagements and piping and drumming instruction. We aim to enter as many band and solo piping and drumming competitions as possible throughout the contest season. We are also keen to provide entertainment at public events such as parades and gala days. This may be arranged by contacting our band secretary. Entertainment may also be arranged for private functions either through personal contact or through an agency specialising in corporate hospitality. Many of our private engagements have been arranged through agencies such as NoteWorthy Events. Over the years the band have been invited to play in France, Belgium, Germany, Russia and Spain mainly visiting towns and cities twinned with Kilmarnock. These visits were generally arranged through East Ayrshire Council and the local twin town committee. The band is grateful to have the continued support of McCallum Bagpipes. Both Stuart McCallum, who was a member of the band for several years, and Kenny MacLeod are always willing to forfeit part of their leisure time with their knowledge and expertise. |
